Gus: 2008 World’s Ugliest Dog Winner

A three-legged, one-eyed, cancer-afflicted dog named Gus has been crowned the World’s Ugliest Dog. The Florida dog captured the hearts and votes of judges at the 20th Annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest held in Petaluma, California. Gus has a very compelling story: he was rescued from a bad home and is suffering from skin cancer. A Chinese-Crested, he has no hair, only three legs (one was amputated because of the skin tumor) and he’s missing an eye that was lost to a tomcat in a cat fight. Despite his trials, he is deeply loved by his mother and daughter owners, Jeanenne and Janey Teed.
By winning the 2008 World’s Ugliest Dog competition, Gus takes home two trophies and $1,600 in prize money. In the past few years, the winners have been dogs that have been abandoned or neglected before being adopted by people who love dogs and usually have several dogs whom they have rescued. Gus was adopted by Jeanenne and her 16-year-old daughter Janey after they found out through word of mouth that he was being kept confined to a small crate in the garage of someone’s home. Jeanenne said, “I’m just in shock. We came so far and are so happy that we can put the winnings towards Gus’ radiation treatment. We’re just thrilled.”
