This poem reaches deep into the readers' minds. I wonder if animals have a similar thinking structure as humans have (e.g., concerning cause and effect). But that just makes the thoughts in this poem even more pitiful because we speak about a victim here of violence that is not explicable and so out of reach. Well done. It reminded me of "Timbuktu" by Paul Auster, a whole novel written out of the perspective of a dog. Greetings: Götz
Please take me home
This is a sad poem about a dog's last ride to the pound, by his "family".
They took you for a ride in the car
Don't know where they are,
He shouted,
She cried,
Now your alone,
Your hungry,
Your tired,
You want to go home.
Sleeping in the cold,
Remembering how things were,
He'd tickle you for hours,
She'd gently brush your hair,
Chasing squirrels through the woods,
Fetching sticks they threw in the park,
They spoke to you as man's best friend,
You'd reply with a happy bark,
It used to be so warm,
Wrapped round their feet,
At the bottom of the bed,
Then you got a basket,
Your own blanket,
And had to sleep downstairs instead,
Twice a day, on your own special plate,
Your meals were freshly prepared,
How your life has changed of late,
All you taste are cold strangers stares,
Eventually, the loyal friend gets kicked
You forget what it's like to taste a bone
Loved and cherished as a pup
Deserted and forgotten once you'd grown.
